General Information

Ocracoke Island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.  The entire island is owned by the US National Park Service, except for the village.  There is a large Parking Area at the southern end of HWY 12 between the Ferry Office and the Ocracoke Preservation Museum.  The National Park Service also has a Visitors Center with Public Rest Rooms in this area.

The speed limit in the village is 20-25 MPH.  In some area you will have to slow down even more.

Pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles MUST share the road.  We encourage visitors to park and walk or rent bikes and please, where possible, stay off the road.  Bicycles are vehicles so please ride on the right.

During the summer months Hwy 12 can be congested in the village.  Please have patience, our traffic jams only last a few minutes.

Please recycle and separate your recyclables into the marked containers, the facility will not accept "contaminated" containers.  Thank you.

Enjoy your visit.
